20 costliest US hurricanes

A look at the 20 costliest tropical cyclones to hit mainland United States, 1900-2010.
Since 2000 the U.S. has experienced nine out of the 20 costliest tropical cyclones (hurricanes) dating back to records from 1900.


A large portion of the damage resulted from inland floods caused by torrential rain.


Here is a look back at those 20 devastating storms, only four of which were Category 4 or Category 5 hurricanes.


Facts and figures provided by the National Hurricane Center, accounting for 2010 deflation rates.

Damage in the billions

Since 2000 the U.S. has experienced nine out of the 20 costliest tropical cyclones (hurricanes) dating back to records from 1900.
